Didymella has a major impact on the commercialisation of butternut fruits. Products downgraded because of fungus symptoms result in significant financial losses. This is not sustainable.
Sakata brings you a solution:
Orionit F1, the only butternut resistant to Didymella! (IR)
The results of this research work have been crowned with success: Orionit F1 butternut was awarded the silver medal for varietal innovation at the Sival Innovation trade fair in December 2024.
Didymella bryoniae is a fungus present in most soils that causes lesions on cucurbits and especially on butternut squash. Concentric brown spots appear on the fruit and develop during storage.
The economic consequences of this fungus can be severe. The spots on the skin prevent the fruit from being marketed in the premium category, directly impacting profits. Crop-care treatments against Didymella are not effective. Varietal improvement remains the only solution.
“We wanted to provide a solution for all butternut producers who are heavily impacted by Didymella, particularly in the South of France”
Hervé Bos, Senior Sales Promoter France
